The Mayor of Paris Backs Down on Olympic Rings

The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, is backing down slightly on the issue of the Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower. She is not entirely giving in to criticism, but says they will now adorn the Eiffel Tower until at least 2028.

Hidalgo's announcement last weekend that the Olympic rings will remain on the Eiffel Tower permanently was met with surprise and criticism.

Among others, descendants of Gustave Eiffel, who built the tower for the World Exhibition in 1889, reacted, saying that the world-famous tower "should not become a billboard".

On Friday, Hidalgo backed down somewhat:

The proposal I have made for the rings is that until 2028, until the Games in Los Angeles, they will remain on the Eiffel Tower.

After 2028, maybe they will stay or maybe not. We'll see, she added.

However, Hidalgo did not back down from the criticism that she should have consulted the city council or listened to the city's residents before making the decision.

The Mayor of Paris is not someone who lets opportunities slip away. When you are the mayor, you make decisions because you have the right to do so, said Hidalgo, who is often called "The Iron Lady" by the Parisians.
