The USA is strengthening its military presence in the Middle East to show support for Israel and deter Iran, announces the Pentagon. Among other things, more fighter jets capable of shooting down ballistic missiles and B-52 bombers will be moved to the area.
"If Iran, its partners or its proxies use this to target American personnel or American interests in the region, the USA will take all necessary measures to defend our forces," says Pentagon spokesperson Pat Ryder.
The reinforcements will start arriving in the coming months, according to Ryder.
