Video support in the ambulance can save lives

Having doctor support via video already in the ambulance can save lives in the event of a stroke, according to a new study. In the acute phase, when brain cells die every minute, it can make a huge difference, says researcher Stefan Candefjord.

Every minute counts between a stroke and the patient receiving proper care.

Therefore, there is much to gain from a neurologist participating in the assessment already during the ambulance transport, according to the Chalmers-led study.

The major advantage is that it can be determined already in the ambulance whether the patient should be taken to a university hospital or to a closer emergency hospital.

This can, according to the researchers, save up to 1.5 hours for a patient.

We believe that there can be very large gains, says Stefan Candefjord, researcher in digital health at Chalmers.

Stroke is a good example, but you can certainly find more applications where time is short and important decisions need to be made.
