This travel document is given to persons who reside in Sweden and require such accommodation usually on grounds of protection or asylum. The requirement is that the applicants must first be able to prove that there is no possibility of getting a passport from the country of origin. Applications can either be made online or physically at a Migration Agency office.
Fill in a form at Migration Agency
In order to start the procedure, the applicants have to fill in a form supplied to them by the Swedish Migration Agency. The highest form, however, should be among a list of several supportive documents, majority of which include the identity and that of residence permit, and verification that attempts to get a passport have been unsuccessful. A number of these applicants, however, have to prove that other factors, apart from their interests, are the reasons for lack of proper travel documents.
Biometric data and application fee
As a part of the application, the applicant has to attend a Migration Agency Office and provide their biometric data (thumb prints and photographs). There is also an application fee which depends on many factors pertaining to the applicant. On receiving the application, the agency searches for all application’s criteria, for which today’s submission of documents is required for issuance of stale – an alien’s passport.
Generally the valid alien’s passport if granted does not exceed three years although it also depends on other factors. In the case of issuance of an “alien's passport" it is not an indelible feature that it can be renewed by uninterrupted extension of the current document.
However, the alien’s passport has one important drawback: it is not purchasable and travels with the United Nations Global Compact Countries-not all countries accept it for travel around the world. So applicants must check this before making their travel arrangements. The alien’s passport is a travel document and should fall in the category of a passport. However, it does not supersede the requirement to possess a national passport to the extent possible (Migrationsverket).
