A drone has crashed into a cargo ship in the Red Sea, according to various observers who monitor maritime traffic there.
The ship is said to have been attacked as it passed outside the coastal city of al-Hudaydah in Yemen, which is one of the strongholds of the Iran-backed Houthi movement in the country. The Houthis are therefore assumed to be behind the attack, although they have not yet commented on it.
The ship is reported to have sustained some damage, but the crew is said to be unharmed.
Besides the war in Gaza, the Houthi movement has carried out at least 60 attacks on ships in the Red Sea off Yemen. The attacks are described by them as support operations for the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas and Palestinians in Gaza. One ship has been hijacked, two have been sunk, and four sailors have been killed.
The US aircraft carrier USS Dwight D Eisenhower has been stationed in the Red Sea for eight months to protect trade passing through the important waterway, but the ship turned back the other day.
