The National Board of Health and Welfare is tasked with mapping out how obesity care functions. Over 16 percent of adults have severe overweight, obesity.

"Obesity is a public health issue that is increasing among the population and also increases the risk of other diseases or disorders," says Health Minister Acko Ankarberg (KD) in a written comment.

She points out that an increased prescription of diabetes medication for weight loss shows that the needs of obesity patients are great.

The goal is for the mapping to lead to better care. It will cover the entire care chain, including planning, lifestyle counseling, various care interventions such as medication and surgery.

The analysis will specifically consider children and young people and include healthcare costs for patients. It is to be completed by May 30, 2026 at the latest.
