Difficult to predict damages for removed uterus

33 women have had their uteruses unnecessarily removed and can request compensation. However, according to the insurance company handling damages in healthcare, it is difficult to predict whether they will receive any money and how large the sums will be in that case.

The regions' mutual insurance company (Löf), whose task is to investigate and compensate patients who are injured in healthcare, became aware of the events at Akademiska in Uppsala at the same time as the hospital's press release was sent out.

As we understand it, the hospital has informed the affected patients about the possibility of seeking compensation through our patient insurance. When the person in question reports their injury to us, we will initiate an investigation that will result in a decision on the right to compensation, says Carl-Johan Linde, communications officer at Löf.

Each case is unique

What are the possibilities of getting compensation for these women?

We compensate avoidable injuries within healthcare, but each case is unique and will need to be investigated by us. We need to ensure whether this injury could have been avoided from the healthcare side.

How large can the compensation be?

Since each case and each investigation is unique, it is not possible to say a general amount. We look at the circumstances in each individual case and make a decision based on that, says Carl-Johan Linde.

"Contact a doctor"

If, as a patient, you do not belong to the group that the region has contacted, but feel worried that you may have been subjected to an avoidable injury within healthcare, Löf recommends that you first contact your treating doctor or the region's patient board.

This is to get a first assessment. If the assessment then is that you as a patient should report your injury to us, then this is something you do directly via our website, says Carl-Johan Linde.

Corrected: In an earlier version of the text, Löf was incorrectly described.
