Chile will support South Africa's goal in the International Court of Justice in The Hague (ICJ) against Israel. The president, Gabriel Boric, has stated this.

In a speech to Congress on Saturday, local time, Boric condemned the situation in Gaza, which he calls a "catastrophic humanitarian situation".

Chile recognized Palestine as a state in 2011 and Gabriel Boric has previously said that the war in Gaza is unacceptable and unjustified.

South Africa has accused Israel of violating the Convention on Genocide. Israel has strongly denied the accusation, and claimed that the war in Gaza is a legitimate defense against terrorist Hamas attacks against Israel on October 7 last year.

The ICJ is considering South Africa's case, but has in the meantime ordered Israel to immediately stop its military operations in Rafah in Gaza, where many Palestinians had fled.

The court's decision was rejected by Israel, which through its security council and foreign ministry called it "unfounded, scandalous and unacceptable".

The ICJ in The Hague is the highest court of the United Nations and handles disputes between sovereign states.

The court's judgments and decisions are legally binding for states that have joined – including Israel – but in practice, the opportunities to ensure compliance are small.
