Eight EU countries want the EU to stop Russian diplomats from moving freely within the EU.

"Free movement throughout the Schengen area for holders of Russian diplomatic passports, accredited in one country, facilitates malicious activities", the eight write in a letter to EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell, according to the news agency Reuters.

The letter writers from the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, and Romania hope that the measure will be able to "significantly reduce the operational area for Russian agents".

Even within Nato, measures against Russian diplomats' freedom of movement are being discussed. Several Nato countries have recently reported suspected Russian influence operations, disinformation, sabotage, and cyber attacks.

The issue of "strengthened restrictions on Russian intelligence personnel" is being discussed by Nato defence ministers in Brussels on Thursday.
