Gais rolled over Djurgården – closing in on Europe

GAIS's sensational season just keeps going. 3–0 at home against Djurgården means they are now only two points from second place in the football Allsvenskan. We notice that we can measure up to most teams, says GAIS coach Fredrik Holmberg.

What a wasp's nest it's becoming at the top of the Allsvenskan table. After Gais' clear victory, while Elfsborg and Hammarby shared points in Borås (0–0), only four points separate the teams in places 2–7.

The results probably pleased Malmö FF the most. The gold favourite (who received Häcken later on Sunday) tops with 50 points, eight ahead of second-place Djurgården and one more ahead of Hammarby.

Praises the fans

The two Stockholm teams, however, have Gais – newcomer in Allsvenskan – hot on their heels in the battle for a top three spot, which means European play.

The combination of the energy the supporters provide and fantastic players, it becomes good, says coach Fredrik Holmberg to Max about the recipe for success.

Sunday's victory at home in Gothenburg was impressive and was largely orchestrated by Gustav Lundgren. The 29-year-old played in Division 2 just a few years ago but is now succeeding in the top league.

He's fantastic both on and off the pitch. He's a wonderful leader who always dares to show the way. Then he has an ability for the entire game, not just individual situations but also the entire match picture. He's an incredibly wonderful player to have, says Fredrik Holmberg.

In the 19th minute, Lundgren set up Axel Henriksson for 1–0 for Gais. And in the 54th, he himself scored 2–0 with an ice-cold lob.

"Better than us"

Lundgren first reached a long clearance, held off Djurgården's central defender Marcus Danielson, and then fooled Dif goalkeeper Jacob Rinne with a cheeky lift.

A few minutes later, the match was definitively won when Alexander Ahl Holmström scored 3–0, his ninth goal of the season, with a long-range shot.

We show that we're not just here to defend, we can challenge the teams that are supposed to be the best in the series, says Lundgren to Max.

Djurgården's coach Thomas Lagerlöf has no excuses after the loss, which makes the dream of winning the championship in 2024 increasingly distant.

It's just to lay down flat, they're better than us, says Lagerlöf to Max.
