Joe Biden should step aside and let another Democrat take on Donald Trump for the presidency in the election in November. This is the opinion of the editorial board of one of the US's most influential newspapers, the New York Times.

But Biden is holding on.

Biden's performance in the TV debate against Donald Trump last night has been described as catastrophic, even within the President's own party.

According to the newspaper, Biden was a shadow of his former self in the debate and could not show that he has the ability and strength for four more years in the presidency, which he himself had wanted to assure the voters.

NYT: High Stakes

Biden's determination to run for re-election is an irresponsible, high-stakes game, according to the newspaper.

"The greatest service Biden can now do for the public is to announce that he does not intend to continue running for re-election", the editorial page writes.

However, Biden has no plans to do so.

He has set his sights on re-election. At an election meeting in New York City, he made it clear that he would not try if he was not fully convinced in his heart and soul that he would be able to do the job.

"Can Do the Job"

At an earlier meeting on Friday, where he gave critics some right about how he came across in the debate, he said that he was a better debater before, that he was less stiff and spoke more clearly and effortlessly.

But I know how to tell the truth and I know how to do this job, said Biden in North Carolina and assured:

If you get knocked down, you get back up again.
