The 57-year-old coaching legend was extremely popular during his time in Dortmund, where he won two German league titles. But now he is being criticized for starting to work for Red Bull – which, among other things, owns Leipzig.
Dortmund's supporter newspaper Schwatzgelb writes that Klopp has ruined his reputation.
"Jürgen Klopp's decision to support Red Bull has ruined his life's work, at least for a large part of Dortmund supporters and supporters in Germany", the newspaper writes.
Many supporters believe that Leipzig is not compatible with the 51-percent rule that applies in Germany. Red Bull's way of conducting football – with multiple clubs in different countries – also often receives criticism from football supporters.
Klopp will work strategically and as support and mentor to coaches and club directors within the Red Bull group, which, in addition to Leipzig, also includes Salzburg, New York, and Leeds.
"After almost 25 years on the sidelines, I couldn't be more excited to work on a project like this", Klopp said in a press release earlier this week.
After many successful years with Liverpool, he left the club after last season. He will start his new job at Red Bull after the turn of the year.
