The accident occurred at 19:00 on Thursday in connection with a thunderstorm rolling in over the area.

A youth team that was training on the football pitch sought shelter under a tree. The lightning then struck the tree, says rescue service incident commander Barry Lewis to SVT News Stockholm.

When the rescue service arrived at the scene, two people were unconscious.

In total, eight people were taken to hospital. Three of them have serious injuries and the other five have less serious injuries, according to Josefine Bergenholtz-Gröndahl.

According to the football club, two teenagers were taken to hospital by ambulance helicopter, reports TV4 News. Police and ambulance personnel took care of the team, which is in shock, according to the channel.

Lidingö municipality has initiated crisis support in connection with the incident.

We are opening up facilities and making sure to be there. We have also informed recreational centers to open. And then we're looking at what the schools can do, says city director Daniel Broman to TT.

We are in close contact with the rescue service. We took the decision to initiate crisis support ourselves. It was a decision we made quickly. It's better to press the button at once.
