UN Top Official: Fewer People Die in Disasters

Fewer people die from cyclones, floods, and droughts – despite climate change being expected to make such disasters more frequent and intense. This is due in part to better warnings, according to a UN top official.

The world has not noticed how the type of storms that once killed hundreds of people now only require a handful of lives, according to Kamal Kishore, new deputy secretary-general of the UN and head of the Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

An example is that warning systems for tsunamis now exist almost everywhere in the world. And better warnings for tropical cyclones mean that the risk of being killed in such a storm in a place like the Philippines is now roughly one-third as large as it was 20 years ago, according to Kishore.
