UNESCO, the UN's cultural organisation, recommends that the prehistoric monument Stonehenge be added to the list of endangered world heritage sites.

In July last year, the British government approved the construction of a controversial road tunnel near Stonehenge, despite protests from activists.

In a written decision, which the AFP news agency has obtained, the World Heritage Committee now recommends that Stonehenge be added to the list in order to "mobilise international support" due to the tunnel plans.

In order for the monument to be classified as endangered, the decision must be voted through by the World Heritage Committee's members at a meeting in New Delhi in July.

Stonehenge has had the status of world heritage site since 1986, and is located in south-west England.
