Several children a day are losing their limbs in the war-torn Gaza, according to the UN's Palestine agency Unrwa.
We have in principle ten children who lose a limb, or two limbs – on average, says Unrwa chief Philippe Lazzarini.
He refers to statistics from the UN's children's fund Unicef, and emphasizes that the figure "does not even include arms and hands".
Ten per day, that means around 2,000 children after over 260 days of this brutal war, says Lazzarini, who adds that amputations often take place in difficult conditions, sometimes without anaesthesia.
Unrwa coordinates nearly all aid to Gaza. Lazzarini says, however, that the organisation's funds currently only seem to be sufficient until the end of August.
Israel has previously during the war directed sharp criticism towards Unrwa, and among other things accused the organisation of having employees with links to terrorist-listed Hamas and to the terrorist attacks in Israel on 7 October last year.
In April, however, a report commissioned by the UN found that Israel had not presented any evidence for the allegations.
