The stage was set for a real football party when the season's first Madrid derby was about to take place at a packed Wanda Metropolitano.

But instead, it all ended in a major scandal.

It was in the 68th minute that several objects, including lighters, were thrown at Real Madrid's goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian, who played for Atletico between 2011 and 2014, had a few minutes earlier mocked the home side in connection with Real Madrid's leading goal, which was not appreciated by Atlético supporters.

Threw lighters

After objects began to be thrown, Courtois tried to draw the referee's attention to it, which was not appreciated by the home crowd. It all escalated, and even more objects were thrown at the Real Madrid players.

Referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer then decided to gather the coaches of the two teams to announce that the match would be interrupted, and then called the players down to the dressing rooms.

Atlético Madrid's coach Diego Simeone and several players then ran out to the home side, to get their supporters to calm down.

Equalized to a draw

More than 20 minutes after the match was interrupted, it could then be resumed. At the time of the interruption, the score was 1-0 to Real Madrid, after central defender Éder Militão scored the leading goal in the 64th minute.

But in stoppage time, substitute Ángel Correa would equalize, and secure a point for the home team. The match ended 1-1.
